Overview
Needs to develop counter moves as he often cannot shed blocks, not for a lack of strength but technique. Read and react potential is there, as at times he will hit the wrong gap, and he hits the gap with explosion so when he does find the right one, he makes the play. At the same time, he hits the hole so fast he often loses balance and cannot make the TFL or sack. If he cleans that up he can be an elite blitzer. For some reason tackles well when RB hits the 2nd level or ball carrier is down the field , but when he meets a ball carrier at the line or behind it, he often misses.
His zone coverage is good, reads the QB’s eyes and has quick hips so he can adjust his body to where the QB is looking and make a break on the ball. Did not see him play much of any man coverage as he is a MLB though his athleticism and zone coverage ability suggests he’d be solid there too.
Game By Game Breakdown
Vs. Miami
Game Overview: Has a fast back pedal and can get back into a deeper zone fast. On blitzes showed burst hitting the gaps but was reckless and often lost balance and couldnt track the QB. Tackling form looked solid. Motor looked good as well, usually near the ball at the end of the play which you want in a MLB.
Grade: B-
Vs. Auburn
Game Overview: Multiple times was unable to shed a block when lineman go to the 2nd level. One of these plays lead to a TD as he was there and could of made the tackle if disengaged. Unlike Vs. Miami, his read and react was hit or miss in this one, often hitting the wrong gap immediately.
Grade: C-
Vs. Alabama
Game Notes: Made a few nice tackles in the open field Vs. talented backs but also took some bad angles and didnt make plays he could of due to not being able to shed blocks. He only played one half (the 2nd) due to a suspension so there wasnt much to judge.
Grade: C+
